A retaining wall holds back soil and water so there is level ground to build on or use. It takes engineering and careful construction. Retaining walls are a core service at Crescent Homes Maui, and our own crews build them. We bring 35 years in the business and thousands of single-family homes and multi-family units built. A single wall is a job we take. ## What we do - Poured in place concrete retaining walls (also called cast in place) - CMU block walls as part of a larger project - Foundation walls - Privacy walls - Waterproofing and drainage behind the wall - Finishes: color or stain, a stamped pattern, a broom finish, or embedded pebbles We work with you and your architect or landscape architect to decide which type of wall the site needs. You can bring your own design team, or we can assemble one for you. ## How a job runs with us - **1. Site walk.** We review your design, look at the location, and identify structural or environmental needs. - **2. Engineering.** The wall is engineered before it is built. The design has to account for the pressure of the backfill against the wall, the weight of the soil, and where the water table sits. - **3. Proposal and timeline.** You get a detailed quote, finish options, and a timeline. - **4. Build.** The steps are listed below, in order. - Set the wall's shape, size and placement - Remove plants, topsoil and debris as needed - Lay out and dig the footings - Build the forms - Add rebar - Pour the footings and the wall - Let the concrete cure - Create contraction joints - Remove the forms and install waterproofing and drainage - Finish the surface We manage permitting and inspections. ## Residential and commercial On a sloped house lot, a retaining wall is often what makes the home pad, the driveway or the pool area possible. On a commercial job, retaining walls are part of the ground work we perform as a trade contractor, along with concrete, excavation, grading, plumbing and electrical. ## Why one contractor for several trades matters A retaining wall is three trades in one job. The site is cleared and excavated. The footings and wall are formed and poured. Then waterproofing and drainage go in behind it and the ground is graded. Our own crews do the excavation, the grading, the concrete and the retaining walls. The company that digs the footing is the same company that pours the wall and installs the drainage. If the wall is part of a larger job, such as a house pad, a driveway or a pool, the same company can do that work too. ## Questions we get ### What kinds of walls do you build? Poured in place concrete walls, foundation walls and privacy walls. CMU block walls when they are part of a larger project. We help you and your architect choose. ### Is the wall engineered? Yes. The wall goes through an engineering process before construction. It covers the pressure of the backfill, the soil weight and the water table. ### What happens when a wall is not engineered well? It may eventually fail to hold back the soil. It can tilt, crack or bow. Salt air is also hard on poor concrete work in Hawaii.
